We’ve got the Trine trilogy incoming, probably to help pave the way for the much-anticipated Trine 4, and we get to start with the original. The developer, Frozenbyte, decided that such support would mean their more famous titles could also find good homes with the Nintendo group, and, guess what, they’re completely right. In my opinion, the fantastic twinstick magic and co-op adventure game could and should have made a bigger splash, and the Switch community rallied around the title upon release, despite some initial bugs. Nine Parchments was a fantastic game that got just enough accolades and attention to make sure it wasn’t totally unnoticed. It's nothing original, but it felt cozy and I loved it! All in all, while I did enjoy Trine, I just didn't enjoy it enough to recommend it to others. Each level has a distinct look and feel, and is rendered in a very typical oversaturated and cartoony fantasy style. The one thing that I really enjoyed about this game was the visuals. That being said, I did have a lot of fun setting up grand constructions with the Wizard that the Thief would then use to bypass most of the actual platforming parts or to get into hard-to-reach areas. Trine falls somewhere in between a platformer and a puzzler, but it doesn't really excel at either of those things, as the challenge never really increases over the course of the game. The story features three heroes on a typical fantasy "save the world by using the magic MacGuffin" tale, and plays out roughly how you would expect. Trine is a pretty simple game - both in terms of story and gameplay. I don't know that I really needed to do that, but all the same, I did have some fun with Trine. I'll be honest, I only picked up Trine because I've had Trine 2 in my Steam library for some time (from some bundle or another), and I wanted to experience the series from the beginning. 5h 30m PlayedI hesitated giving this game a thumbs down, because I did enjoy it, but ultimately not enough to recommend that others spend their money and time on it.
